Mountain Biking Bliss

Whether there's snow on the ground or meadows of wildflowers, mountain biking is a sport that enthusiasts can dive into year-round.

Just listen to Ken Long of Truckee’s own Tahoe Mountain Guides as he describes conditions that he rides in 365 days a year: hard packed fall ground...OR watching out for rocks rolling in the moon-dusty summer months…OR working your way up to the mudline in the spring…OR following the snowmobile trails on a fat-tire bike in the winter.

Tahoe Mountain Guides is not your typical “BY mountain bikers FOR mountain-bikers” outfit. Sure they cater to experienced shredders, but unless you’ve a seasoned local rider, almost every session starts with a level-set on gear and conditions.

TMG is has sessions for:

  • Eager, beginner grasshoppers – Instructional clinics teach concrete, progressive techniques.

  • Beginners who need a confidence-boost – TMB guides are experienced trainers who can spot the course correction you need in the moment to build skills and confidence.

  • Ninja-riders – With a quick advanced-level orientation, you can look forward to a peak experience combining legendary trails with conditions that are scoped day-to-day, so you don’t have to rely on last season’s reports. Just head out and shred.

  • Families – They has kid and youth gear and can cater a group session for your home crew, down to your tiniest shredder.

  • Clinics for women – Women who want a focused session geared for our learning style and without being talked down to can find camaraderie and progress to new levels at TMG.

Ken also has lots to say on how TMG’s guided tours and rentals are a step above typical mountain biking outfits:

  • Tours include lunch – Like a full-service outfitter, everything down to lunch and snacks are included, so all you have to do to prep is pick up the phone.

  • Beginners go out on advanced gear – When you ride with TMG, they’ve made the investment in costly gear. So you’ll get a much smoother ride than on the entry-level gear you buy yourself, so you can leave your starter ride at home.

  • Permits give you broad trail access – TMG holds extensive permits from the U.S. Forest Service, so they can get you out on a wide range of trails that suit every ability level. That all means you’ll be pausing for some pretty awesome views, too!

  • You go out in small groups – TMG guides will only take 3-4 riders at a time. They assess riders and split you up according to ability so you can all ride at your level.

  • Get insider info on Truckee – Your guide will keep you entertained and engaged with local history, lore and funny stories about Truckee and Lake Tahoe. And you don’t have to listen to endless war-stories. Tours are about you and never the guide.

  • Guides are medically trained – It’s never part of the plan, but your guide is prepared for an accident. All TMG guides are either EMTs, nurses or WFR-certified.

Some special DIY trips and guided trail tours to check out:
